FIRE DRILL AT BORBET IN MEDEBACH
The scenario was planned by the Medebach Volunteer Fire Department in consultation with the plant manager, the production manager, and the fire safety officer at BORBET. Thanks to many years of partnership and cooperation, the training of the emergency services and their knowledge of the local conditions on the factory premises are constantly being refreshed.
After assessing the overall situation, two attack teams wearing breathing apparatus entered the artificially fogged first floor. There they searched for the four missing persons, played by members of the youth fire department. The rescued persons were taken outside on stretchers for first aid.
While the rescue operation was still underway, the volunteer firefighters were surprised by another scenario planned by fire inspector Klaus Schnellen. In the production area, a person was trapped under a forklift truck. Using lifting bags, hydraulic spreaders, and support material, the accident victim, in this case a training dummy, was freed.
Following the operation, an initial debriefing was held with Herbert Kordes, head of the Medebach volunteer fire department, with all the firefighters and those responsible at BORBET.
Overall, everyone involved was satisfied with the emergency drills, but in the end they all agreed: “We hope that we will never have to apply the knowledge and experience we have gained in a real emergency.”
